Rochefort
Château comtal de rochefort
Built on a rocky spur, the name Rocha Fortis, meaning the fortified rock, is mentioned for the first time in 1155. This designation gave its name to today's city: Rochefort.
In the early 17th century, Jean-Théodore de Loewenstein and his wife Josine de La Marck developed a lavish court. In 1795, during the French Revolution, the castle was seized as an act of war. It was then confiscated and sold. The new owners had to gradually sell off the furniture and then the stones. Abandoned for over a century, the site was renovated. Around 1987, the castle ruins became accessible to the public. They remain a testament to the rich past of the city of Rochefort.
Listed as a Walloon heritage site and monument, the place became private. Today, guided tours are organized by Lady Emelyne, the witch, and her colleagues who will tell you about the magic of the place.
